Carpet cleaner By Mal DeMer I bought the "commercial" unit to get larger holding tanks, since smaller units require annoyingly frequent refills and empties. The one gallon tank on this unit is sufficient for an average sized room. The dirty water tank is also adequate. The unit is simple enough to assemble, and works well. The tanks go on and off easily. There is no doubt that carpets look much better after cleaning, and of course the dirty water attests to the fact that a lot of soil has been removed. I personally recommend a rinse after cleaning with the detergent-containing water. To do this one must empty the cleaning solution from the tank and replace it with water only. This is not inconvenient, and is actually better than those systems that enable detergent on-and-off, since it is simpler and therefore less prone to failure. On the negative side, I was surprised that the unit did not include an upholstery accessory, especially since the instructions for that are included. Also, it has fittings to accommodate the accessory. I spoke to the Shoplet representative about this, and after some discussion they agreed to send a new unit, from which I could remove the missing parts and return the rest. The new box arrived promptly, but also contained no upholstery accessory. It appears that for some unknown reason Hoover is shipping these out without the accessory, although it had been sold as a "carpet and upholstery cleaner" on Amazon. From the Shoplet representative I learn that Hoover says it is a carpet cleaner only, despite the aforementioned instructions, pictures, and fittings that are in the box and on the machine. You figure that one out. Shoplet gave me a partial refund, and that is the end of that. If you want an upholstery cleaner, look elsewhere besides this Hoover machine. As another negative point, there is a clip on the cleaner handle to help hold the wire off the floor, but it is almost impossible to get the wire in it, and when you do it will pop out the first time you step on the wire. I solved this with a piece of duct tape to hold the wire more securely. I haven't had the unit long enough to comment on its durability. 21 of 29 people found the following review helpful. "Oh, that's just the name" By Shay Lynn I bought this from Sears, which was my first mistake. When we got it assembled, I followed the instructions on filling it with hot tap water and waited ten minutes. When I began using it, what came out of the machine was colder than the tap water I put in. I called the Hoover customer care number to ask how you make actual steam come out of the SteamVac and was told (and I quote) "Oh, that's just the name." Sears, in its ongoing campaign to gouge as much money out of the buying public as it can before going bankrupt, charged me a $30 restocking fee because I had already opened the box. When I asked how else a customer is supposed to know that the SteamVac Carpet Cleaner neither steams nor cleans, the conversation ended. 4 of 8 people found the following review helpful. TOBY By Barbara Brunermer THIS MACHINE DIDN'T WORK FROM DAY ONE. IT MAY HAVE BEEN A LEMON. IT WOULD DISPENSE THE SOLUTION, BUT IT WOULDN'T SUCK IT UP. ONLY HOOVER PRODUCT THAT DISAPPOINTED.
